NATURES SURPRISES

Kings Beach Retreats abuts the Newland Head Conservation Park which is recognised as being a rare eco system of high conservation significance, containing perhaps the most spectacular portion of the Heysen Trail.

Guests will find an amazing diversity of native vegetation and wild flowers along this walk.

A pair of White-bellied Sea-Eagles have their home territory at Waitpinga Cliffs and can often be seen soaring in magestic circles. They are the only known breeding pair on the Fleurieu and the only nest on the mainland coast between Eyre Peninsula and the Victorian border. They are listed as endangered and are very sensitive in their breeding season when they will abandon their nest and young if disturbed. A great deal of work is being done to protect them including a strict protection area, so please be very careful not to disturb.

The Cliffs are also home to the Peregrine Falcon, the Beautiful Firetail, Diamond Firetail and the endangered Chestnut-rumped Heathwren. You may be lucky enough to sight some of these special birds during your walk.

When on the trail you are likely to see quite a few different birds of prey catching the updrafts from the cliffs and also many species of bush birds along the way. Well over 100 different bird species have been sighted on the cliff top. When walking the trail, also keep an eye open for the smallest of the scrub birds, the Brown Thornbill and the Spotted and Striated Pardalote. You are likely to see the popular Superb Fairy-wren (Blue Wren), little Red-browed Finches, the White-browed Scrubwren, Silvereye and many honeyeaters foraging amongst the cliff top vegetation. The lovely bell-like contact call of the Fleurieu’s Adelaide Rosella and the beautiful song of the Golden Whistler and Grey Shrike-thrush are a common accompaniment to other along the trail.

Kangaroos, echidna, lizards, and at times, the Yellow-footed Antechinus, a small nocturnal marsupial, are among the many possible 'natures surprises' you many encounter around the next corner. The height of the cliff also the affords the walker the possibility of sighting dolphinsand seals at the base of the cliffs. The cliff top offers one of the most magnificent locations for whale watching in the area during the season (May-October).

Both bird and native flora lists available in the retreats.
